Well, the easier question might be,”Where Aren’t we Going?”
We will be starting off with our first leg of the trip in South America. On November 30, 2011 we fly to Bogota, Colombia. From there we will travel clockwise around South America for over six months. We anticipate being in Venezuela over Christmas, the Brazilian Amazon after the New Year, Brazil/Uruguay during Carnival, Buenos Aires during their Tango Festival, Patagonia in March, Bolivia in April, and the Galapagos Islands in late May. The only thing we have planned for sure is a 4-day hike along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in early May. We hope to see everything that the continent has to offer!
We will fly back to Virginia for about a month. From there, our travels are more open but we will most likely start our second leg of the trip by flying to St. Petersburg, Russia in July 2012. We will zig-zag our way through Eastern Europe and jump over to southern Germany in late September (Oktoberfest #2???). We will follow this up with a tour of Greece before heading to the Middle East around Christmas 2012. From there we’ll head down through parts of Africa and ultimately end up in South Africa where we’ll fly back to the United States again.
Our final leg of the trip will start in New Zealand and Australia before island hopping through Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. At this point in time Asia is completely up in the air, but we would like to make our way through Thailand, Nepal, India, Cambodia, Vietnam, S. Korea, Taiwan, China, and Japan at a minimum.
We estimate that the entire trip will take approximately two years. We would love to hear your travel stories and suggestions. Some of the best experiences come from talking to fellow travelers and taking their recommendations.
