Maggie and I spent our honeymoon on the Island of Sao Miguel, Azores. The “Green Island” is absolutely beautiful, the Portuguese are refreshingly warm and very willing to share their culture, it’s a volcanic island with hot springs and hot ocean pools, and it was an amazing trip. Azores is truly a mostly-undiscovered gem! . We also HIGHLY recommend staying at “Quinta do Mar”!

Brian and Kristin, enjoy your travels!!

Amazing opportunity you have made for yourselves – Congrats! I used to live with Erik in FredVegas and would love to help if I can. Spent some time in quite a few places, but only a couple where I still have contacts – East Africa, Portugal and the Czech Republic. The latter 2 I just have a friend or 2 who live there that may be able to make you feel more at home and point you to the non-tourist attractions.

If you remember, get in touch with me about a month before you hit East Africa – I spent 7 months in Tanzania, based out of Arusha, and still have many close friends and colleagues there who will always help a traveler and make a new friend.

I did a behavioral study on an elephant there that lives on a private wildlife reserve called Ndarakwai – its a must-see – now more developed into a tourist area than when I was there, but my connection with the owners and the SIT group that hosts studetns there can probably help you on your travels. Also have some personal friends who, if they are in town, would make awesome tour guides for some prime wildlife interactions.

Hit the NgoroNgoro Crater for some of the rarest wildlife, DarEsSalaam for a very unique cultural experience, Lake Victoria just to say you were there, climb Mt Kilimanjaro if you have time (pay a local guide and buy some used gear before you go – it can be a tough trek) and last tip, check out the wildebeast and elephant migration patterns through the Serengeti and if you can line up your travels with them, you will never forget that image – ever.

Mr Frost was on to something:
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

    Here’s to exploring…
